Texas Wins Important Victory In Its Fight Against Obamacare Federal judge declares Obamacare unconstitutional, says entire law “must be declared void” | ||||
AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott released a statement following U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson’s ruling today that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate is unconstitutional and strikes down the entire law: “This is a great day for liberty and the vitality of the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution limits Congressional power, and in this case, Congress exceeded its power. As Judge Vinson’s decision made clear, Congress cannot regulate inactivity under the Commerce Clause, and therefore exceeded its Constitutionally-set boundaries by requiring all Americans – against their will – to buy government-approved health insurance.
“Judge Vinson also declared that ‘because the individual mandate is unconstitutional and not severable, the entire Act must be declared void.’ This is an important step to the path of reducing government intrusion into the lives of all Americans.” | ||||

Large Coronal Hole opening up on the Sun today
CORONAL HOLE: A dark croissant-shaped hole has opened up in the sun's atmosphere, and it is spewing a stream of solar wind into space. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of the vast opening during the early hours of Jan. 30th:

Researchers call this a "coronal hole." Solar rotation is turning the coronal hole toward Earth. The stream of solar wind pouring from it will swing around and hit our planet in early February, possibly sparking polar magnetic storms. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras between Feb. 2nd and 4th.

- Mayor Leppert is the former CEO of Turner Construction, who on the December 16, was on the DISD board meeting to perform upgrades to L.G. Pinkston High and two other schools. Pinkston and at least one of the other schools were low performers. Does Leppert care about the condition of the minds of the students in those schools or whether the physical school is in good shape?

- Our focus on crime in Dallas should be community policing, because the robbers, drug dealers, and gang bangers roam the land with no regard for common human decency. "Community policing is a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies, which support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques, to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime."
- With the successful implementation of community policing, crime will decrease drastically and we can get more small business' to move into the southern sector generating more jobs, creating more economic development.(police can't control community, the community must control the community)
- We must find a community solution for all the abandoned properties within the southern sector. This brings a hamper own the budget, community safety, basically creating a MAJOR Quality of Life problem for the residents in the neighborhoods near these abandoned properties.(the government resources are limited, but the citizens resources are vast). For instance any neighborhood where these properties are located should have community cleanups, all you need is trash bags, lawn mowers, paint, plywood, nails, weed eaters, and volunteers just to name a few.

Those without a Facebook account won’t be able to access the site, and all its existing proprietary user profiles, along with their private messages, uploaded content, and subscriptions will be deleted.
While the authenticated identity of Facebook profiles may improve submission quality, the switch is likely to anger the eleven year-old site’s core users. Exclusive use of Facebook Login is better for new sites, those without significant existing user content, or those with a plan to more gracefully migrate their service.
eHow.com has had a strong year, increasing its monthly unique visitors from 25 million to nearly 40 million by some reports . This makes such an abrupt and major change a curious choice. eHow.com already offers Facebook as a login option, and the site’s success to date shows it doesn’t depend on the social graph.
Suddenly, users have been given only six days to archive any content they wish to keep. eHow.com appears to have chosen not to announce the change on their blog or via any home page signage, instead opting to send an email today. Users not paying close attention to their email could come back next month to find that important conversations, how-to videos they’ve posted, and all their existing activity on the site has disappeared.
Rather than rebuild their on-site network from the subset of people they’re Facebook friends with, I believe many will leave the site for good or drastically reduce their engagement. eHow.com’s users appear to agree, as the response to the entry on how to log in via Facebook has been overwhelmingly negative.
Other websites should learn a lesson from eHow.com’s seemingly unwise decision. Though Facebook Login offers many advantages, users currently aren’t always comfortable bringing their real identity outside of the canvas, and are rarely keen on having their content deleted.

DART approves agency's first CNG bus order
In the latest phase of its clean transit fuels program, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) board has approved one of the nation's largest compressed natural gas (CNG) bus orders.
The $210 million contract with North American Bus Industries, Inc. of Anniston, Alabama will allow the agency to purchase up to 452 new 30-foot and 40-foot heavy duty, low floor buses to replace the current fleet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and clean diesel buses which began service in 1998. The new buses are scheduled to be in service in 2013. The full fleet conversion should be complete in 2015.
DART plans to award a contract in April for the construction of four CNG fueling stations. The stations will be located at its bus and Paratransit maintenance facilities.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: On March 1, 2004, the Department of Homeland
Security published the initial version of the National Incident
Management System (NIMS). NIMS provides a consistent nationwide
template to enable Federal, State, Tribal, and local governments, the
private sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together to
prepare for, prevent, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the
effects of incidents regardless of cause, size, location, or
complexity. This consistency provides the foundation for use of NIMS
for all incidents, ranging from daily occurrences to incidents
requiring a coordinated Federal response. The NIMS document was revised
and released in December 2008 based on input from stakeholders at every
level within the Nation's response community and lessons learned during
recent incidents.
A critical tool in promoting the nationwide implementation of NIMS
is a well-developed training program that guides and enables NIMS
training throughout the Nation. Core competencies will form the basis
of the training courses' learning objectives and personnel
qualifications that validate proficiency.
The National Integration Center at FEMA is charged with developing
NIMS core competencies, training courses, and personnel qualifications.
This updated NIMS Training Plan describes the operational foundations
of these efforts, defines NIMS core competencies, training courses, and
personnel qualifications as part of NIMS national training, assembles
and updates the training guidance for available NIMS courses (organized
as a core curriculum), and lays out a future plan to continue
development of NIMS national training.

The Great Recession of 2007–2009 produced widespread employment losses for communities of color and white families alike—losses that have yet to be overcome amid the still tentative economic recovery. All U.S. households were severely hurt by the recession but communities of color experienced larger losses than whites. This also means that, as the economic recovery deepens and the labor market recovers, communities of color will have to climb out of a deeper hole to regain the same level of economic security as they had before the crisis.
This policy brief on the state of communities of color as we enter 2011 includes a specific list of policy recommendations from CAP's Progress 2050 project to address these three policy lessons.

January 21, 2011 (WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement in response to recent media reports that a deadly terror attack was narrowly avoided at a Martin Luther King Day parade in Spokane, WA, Monday, when three alert citizens noticed an unattended backpack that contained a sophisticated explosive device:
“I commend the alertness of the citizens who detected this potentially deadly device and the prompt action of local law enforcement who re-routed the parade and defused the bomb.”
“Sadly, this incident has been all but ignored by the national media and the Congress. I am concerned that House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King has chosen to singularly focus on the threat posed by Islamic extremist groups. Failure to examine threats posed by homegrown ideologically-driven violent extremists may present a critical vulnerability to the security of the nation. So, I take it that this ensemble of alleged community activists only comes out to the hood when the cameras are rolling? We don't want you all in Oak Cliff/South Dallas/West Dallas if you're not going to be proactive, tell all of them what I said.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would be ashamed of this situation, to see the media whores come out in droves when one of my friends gets murdered by the police. What about everyday life, do you all even care, or is this another front to rob the tax-payers in the name of helping the community? I just want to know?
I've resided in Dallas all my life, what about you guys? I've went to every school in the Ledbetter / Bonnie View corridor, what about you? I've lived in the rough streets of Dallas, and I fully understand the issues at hand. I've sold crack, robbed, and all type of evil activities in the name of getting myself out of poverty, as so many others do now in my community.
